Style Standardization Integration Plan
Overview
This document outlines the systematic integration of Phase 1 and Phase 2 style standardization across the entire vertical farming application.
Phase 1 & 2 Accomplishments
Phase 1 - Foundation
- ✅ Enhanced @theme design tokens (farm-specific spacing, colors, typography)
- ✅ Modern @utility directives replacing @layer utilities
- ✅ Farm-specific component library (FarmControlButton, PlantCard, SensorPanel, FarmLayout)
- ✅ Comprehensive demo showcasing all capabilities
Phase 2 - Forms & Mobile
- ✅ Extended design tokens for forms, mobile, and data visualization
- ✅ Core form components (FarmInput, FarmSelect, FarmCheckbox, FarmRangeSlider)
- ✅ Advanced form templates (PlantConfigForm, SensorCalibrationForm)
- ✅ Mobile optimization and data visualization utilities
Integration Strategy
Stage 1: Core UI Component Migration
Goal: Replace existing shadcn/ui components with enhanced versions
1.1 Button Component Enhancement
- Current:
components/ui/button.tsx
- basic shadcn button - Action: Enhance with farm-specific variants while maintaining backward compatibility
- Priority: High - used across entire app
1.2 Input Component Integration
- Current:
components/ui/input.tsx
- basic input with some enhancements - Action: Merge capabilities with
FarmInput
for unified component - Priority: High - forms throughout app
1.3 Form Component Consolidation
- Current:
components/ui/select.tsx
,checkbox.tsx
, etc. - Action: Enhanced versions with farm-specific design tokens
- Priority: Medium - specific form usage
Stage 2: Page-Level Integration
Goal: Update all major pages to use standardized components and utilities
2.1 Dashboard Page (app/(app)/dashboard/page.tsx
)
- Current State: 1,246 lines with custom styled components
- Integration Needs:
- Replace Button instances with enhanced FarmControlButton
- Convert custom cards to use standardized farm design tokens
- Apply new typography utilities (text-farm-title, text-sensor-value)
- Use new state pattern utilities (state-active, state-maintenance)
2.2 Farms Page (app/(app)/farms/page.tsx
)
- Current State: Complex farm management interface
- Integration Needs:
- Replace Select components with FarmSelect
- Integrate PlantCard and SensorPanel components
- Apply FarmLayout components for better structure
- Use farm-specific spacing and color tokens
2.3 Additional Pages
- Analytics Dashboard
- Grow Management
- Operations
- Team Management
- Settings/Account pages
Stage 3: Layout & Navigation Enhancement
Goal: Modernize app-wide layout with standardized design system
3.1 Sidebar Enhancement (components/layout/ServerSidebar.tsx
)
- Current: Basic Tailwind classes
- Action: Apply new design tokens and farm-specific styling
- Integration: Enhanced navigation states and visual hierarchy
3.2 Main Layout Updates
- Apply consistent spacing using new farm-specific tokens
- Implement standardized shadow system
- Enhanced dark mode support
Stage 4: Component Library Consolidation
Goal: Create unified component system
4.1 Legacy Component Updates
- Update existing components to use new design tokens
- Maintain API compatibility while enhancing visuals
- Add farm-specific variants where appropriate
4.2 New Component Integration
- Replace ad-hoc components with standardized versions
- Implement consistent prop interfaces
- Add comprehensive TypeScript types

Technical Implementation Details
Component Migration Strategy
// 1. Enhance existing components while maintaining backward compatibility
export const Button = ({ variant, ...props }) => {
// Map legacy variants to new farm-specific variants
const farmVariant = legacyToFarmVariantMap[variant] || variant;
return <FarmControlButton variant={farmVariant} {...props} />;
};
// 2. Gradual replacement with deprecation warnings
export const LegacyButton = deprecated(Button, 'Use FarmControlButton instead');
Design Token Application
/* Replace hardcoded values with tokens */
.old-style {
padding: 16px; /* ❌ */
color: #1f2937; /* ❌ */
}
.new-style {
padding: var(--spacing-plant); /* ✅ */
color: var(--color-farm-text); /* ✅ */
}
Form Enhancement Pattern
// Before: Basic form
<form>
<Input label="Plant Name" />
<Select options={varieties} />
<Button type="submit">Save</Button>
</form>
// After: Enhanced farm form
<form className="farm-form">
<FarmInput label="Plant Name" inputSize="lg" />
<FarmSelect label="Variety" options={varieties} />
<FarmControlButton variant="primary" size="lg">Save Plant</FarmControlButton>
</form>
